Polar metals are challenging to identify spectroscopically because the fingerprints of electric polarization are often obscured by the presence of screening charges. Here, we unravel unambiguous signatures of a distortive polar order buried in the Fermi sea by probing the nonlinear optical response of materials driven by tailored terahertz fields. We apply this strategy to investigate the topological crystalline insulator Pb1−xSnxTe, tracking its soft phonon mode in the time domain and observing the occurrence of inversion symmetry breaking as a function of temperature. By combining measurements across the material’s phase diagram with ab initio calculations, we demonstrate the generality of our approach. These results highlight the potential of terahertz driving fields to reveal polar orders coexisting with itinerant electrons, thus opening additional avenues for material discovery.more » « less

The confined variational method is used to study the elastic scattering of the positron from the ground-state helium with the scattering energy in the range from 0.05 eV to 11.02 eV. Describing the correlation effect with explicitly correlated Gaussians, we obtain accurate phase shifts, S-wave scattering length, elastic scattering cross sections, and annihilation parameters for different incident momenta. Specifically, by a least-squares fit of the data to the effective-range theory, we determine the room temperature annihilation parameter Zeff = 3.955, which is in perfect agreement with the measured result of 3.94 ± 0.02 [J. Phys. B 8, 1734 (1975)].more » « less

Abstract Arc magmas are produced from the mantle wedge, with possible addition of fluids and melts derived from serpentinites and sediments in the subducting slab. Identification of various sources and their relevant contributions to such magmas is challenging; in particular, at continental arcs where crustal assimilation may overprint initial geochemical signatures. This study presents oxygen isotopic compositions of zoned olivine grains from post-caldera basalts and boron contents and isotopes of these basalts and glassy melt inclusions hosted in quartz and clinopyroxene of silicic tuffs in the Toba volcanic system, Indonesia. High-magnesian (≥87 mol% Fo [forsterite]) cores of olivine in the basalts have δ18O values ranging from 5.12‰ to 6.14‰, indicating that the mantle source underneath Toba is variably enriched in 18O. Olivine with <87 mol% Fo has highly variable (4.8–7.2‰), but overall increased, δ18O values, interpreted to reflect assimilation of high δ18O crustal materials during fractional crystallization. Mass balance calculations constrain the overall volume of crustal assimilation for the basalts as ≤13%. The processes responsible for the 18O-enriched basaltic melts are further constrained by boron data that indicate the addition of <0.1 wt% fluids to the mantle, >40% of the fluids being derived from serpentinites and others from altered oceanic crust and sediments. This amount of fluids can increase δ18O of the magma by only ~0.02‰. Approximately 6–9% sediment-derived melt hybridization in the mantle wedge is further needed to yield basaltic melts with δ18O values in equilibrium with those of the high-Fo olivine cores. The cogenetic silicic tuffs, on the other hand, seem to record a higher proportion of fluid addition dominated by sediment-derived fluids to the mantle source, in addition to crustal assimilation. Our reconnaissance study therefore demonstrates the application of combined B and O isotopes to differentiate between melts and fluids derived from serpentinites and sediments in the subducted slab—an application that can be applied to arc magmas worldwide.more » « less

Product catalogs, conceptually in the form of text-rich tables, are self-reported by individual retailers and thus inevitably contain noisy facts. Verifying such textual attributes in product catalogs is essential to improve their reliability. However, popular methods for processing free-text content, such as pre-trained language models, are not particularly effective on structured tabular data since they are typically trained on free-form natural language texts. In this paper, we present Tab-Cleaner, a model designed to handle error detection over text-rich tabular data following a pre-training / fine-tuning paradigm. We train Tab-Cleaner on a real-world Amazon Product Catalog table w.r.t millions of products and show improvements over state-of-the-art methods by 16% on PR AUC over attribute applicability classification task and by 11% on PR AUC over attribute value validation task.more » « less

Knowledge graph embeddings (KGE) have been extensively studied to embed large-scale relational data for many real-world applications. Existing methods have long ignored the fact many KGs contain two fundamentally different views: high-level ontology-view concepts and fine-grained instance-view entities. They usually embed all nodes as vectors in one latent space. However, a single geometric representation fails to capture the structural differences between two views and lacks probabilistic semantics towards concepts’ granularity. We propose Concept2Box, a novel approach that jointly embeds the two views of a KG using dual geometric representations. We model concepts with box embeddings, which learn the hierarchy structure and complex relations such as overlap and disjoint among them. Box volumes can be interpreted as concepts’ granularity. Different from concepts, we model entities as vectors. To bridge the gap between concept box embeddings and entity vector embeddings, we propose a novel vector-to-box distance metric and learn both embeddings jointly. Experiments on both the public DBpedia KG and a newly-created industrial KG showed the effectiveness of Concept2Box.more » « less

Because of their central importance in chemistry and biology, water molecules have been the subject of decades of intense spectroscopic investigations. Rotational spectroscopy of water vapor has yielded detailed information about the structure and dynamics of isolated water molecules, as well as water dimers and clusters. Nonlinear rotational spectroscopy in the terahertz regime has been developed recently to investigate the rotational dynamics of linear and symmetric-top molecules whose rotational energy levels are regularly spaced. However, it has not been applied to water or other lower-symmetry molecules with irregularly spaced levels. We report the use of recently developed two-dimensional (2D) terahertz rotational spectroscopy to observe high-order rotational coherences and correlations between rotational transitions that were previously unobservable. The results include two-quantum (2Q) peaks at frequencies that are shifted slightly from the sums of distinct rotational transitions on two different molecules. These results directly reveal the presence of previously unseen metastable water complexes with lifetimes of 100 ps or longer. Several such peaks observed at distinct 2Q frequencies indicate that the complexes have multiple preferred bimolecular geometries. Our results demonstrate the sensitivity of rotational correlations measured in 2D terahertz spectroscopy to molecular interactions and complexation in the gas phase.more » « less
